Starwin’s work is based on a passion and belief in Territory talent, the need for community change and creating innovative solutions. Founded in 2010 with the mantra ‘Champions. Change. Community.’, since their inception, they have worked to provide opportunities for promising young athletes from the Top End and in particular Tiwi girls with their career pathways.
We have pledged to provide $5000 towards their Tiwi Youth Girls Leadership program. On the Tiwi Islands, there are many issues of domestic violence, housing overcrowding and suicide. This program creates a pathway to engage the young women through women’s AFL and connect them with role models whilst building their peer support skills. Partnering with the Australian Defence Force for the past 3 years, Starwin has been able to send over 10 young Tiwi women and 2 leaders to firstly Victoria and now Adelaide for a couple of days work experience with the ADF and to take part in an indigenous women’s AFL carnival.
The money raised through our Kakadu Adventure will go towards the costs of bringing the young women over from the Tiwi Islands (ADF covers the cost to travel from Darwin down and back), accommodation & catering and provide participants with sports bags, new boots, sports socks, mouthguards and other ‘lifestyle’ essentials so their wellbeing needs are taken care of and they can fully enjoy the experience.
